Journey towards project, programme, risk and change management maturity

• Step 1 - Separating Project Management from Business As Usual
  

  Even organisations that work in a project environment will have business as usual and projects. Business-as-usual activities are the normal day-to-day tasks that drive any organisation. They are stable well understood and to a large extent predictable.

  A Project is a management environment that is created for the purpose of delivering one or more business products according to a specified Business Case (Managing Successful Projectswith PRINCE2®).

  In other words a project will create new products, services, processes and systems the introduction of which will lead to change in the business as usual environment.

• Step 2 - Qualification-based courses for self-development
  

  Organisations provide training in best practice methodologies and approaches. There are three major bodies that provide professional examinations in projects and programmes and risk management:

  APMG
  Office of Government Commerce (OGC) best practice methodologies in Project Management, Programme Management and Management of Risk are accredited by the APM Group Limited:

  • PRINCE2®
  • MSP™
  • M_O_R™
  • Change Management

  APM
  The Association for Project Management uses its Book of Knowledge and provides the following examinations

  • APM Introductory Certificate
  • APMP (Professional Certificate)
  • Practitioner Qualification
  • CPM: Certified Project Manager

  PMI
  The Project Management Institute uses its Book of Knowledge and provides the following examinations

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

• Step 3 - Applying Best Practice Methodologies
  

  After their that their staff has been trained, organisation apply these methodologies in to their organisation. The methodologies are very generic, unwieldy and far too bureaucratic.

• Step 4 - Need for tailored Best Practice Methodologies
  

  Organisations start to develop their own methodologies using best practice as the basis. Elements from projects, programmes and risk management best practice are blended to form a bespoke methodology to be used by the clients. Methodology is developed and implemented and training is commissioned to support the roll out. Maven Training have worked extensively with our clients from the public and private sector to develop and embed PPM methodologies. This has been done in various ways:

  • Quality Assurance Role, Carry out a role as a subject matter expert
  • Review of existing methodology to map against processes and carry out a gap analysis
  • Design of templates and worked examples to be included in hard copy or intranet sites
  • Document review and email advice

  We are of the opinion that the clients are best placed to develop methodologies as we want to create independence rather than dependence. We act as facilitators and subject matter experts thus enabling our clients to apply the knowledge they have gained through the investment in training.

• Step 5 - Enhancements to the Best Practice Methodology
  

  Organisations assess their maturity as part of the process of continual development.

  A training needs analysis can also be performed if required, this is to ensure the training and development initiatives are aligned with the strategy and aims of your organisation. Educating staff is vital, if not the key element to any organisations success and it is important the training you provide is the best return on your investment and will deliver on your stated objectives.
